Slovenian police are investigating who may have burned a wooden statue of Melania Trump, wife of US President Donald Trump, in the vicinity of her hometown of Sevnica.

Slovenian television RTV reports on its website that the figure, the work of the American Brad Downey and made by the Slovenian Maxi, burned last Sunday, coinciding with the anniversary of his placement, on July 5, 2019. "The firefighters ( ...) they put out the fire, but the sculpture is damaged by the fire, "indicates the station.

The life-size work created with a chainsaw depicts the First Lady in a blue dress waving from afar to her hometown of some 5,000 inhabitants. The sculpture drew much criticism because it does not reflect Melania's appearance due to its particular carving.

"I understand why people think it does not reflect their physical appearance," Donwney said of the critical comments, although he argues that in his opinion the statue was very beautiful. At the time it was inaugurated, the artist - who was born in the same hospital as the first lady of the United States - reported that the objective of the work was "to dialogue with the political situation in my country" and to highlight the status of Melania Trump as immigrant married to a president who vowed to reduce immigration.

Last January, a wooden figure critically representing Donald Trump was also burned by unidentified individuals in the Slovenian town of Moravice, where he settled a month earlier to attract tourists. The sculpture, eight meters high and entitled "Statue of Liberty", and which represented Trump sarcastically, was the work of the Slovenian artist Toni Schlegel, who wanted to denounce the rise of populism in the world. It showed Trump in a blue suit and her traditional red tie raising the fist of her right arm.
