  • Selectividad. Teachers denounce the "discrimination" of the Catalan Selectividad: "It is pointed out to the student who asks the questions in Spanish"

The universities of the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community have taken advantage of this Selectividad call - the most complicated in its organization due to the Covid-19 pandemic - to introduce ideological content in the tests on the subject of the co-official language. In the exams last Tuesday, students had to comment on two journalistic texts in which Catalan and Valencian were presented as languages threatened by Spanish in stories characterized by their victimhood. The same day, in the universities of Catalonia , the students who wanted the questions in Spanish had to ask for it expressly and the professors made it known as if it were "an incident".

In the Balearic Catalan Language and Literature test, students were urged to comment on an opinion article published in the Ara newspaper in which the author criticizes that electronic voice assistants - type Alexa - are not adapted to answer in Catalan to the users of the " Catalan countries " and they can do so in Spanish. "We are talking about an assistant who helps or distracts us, not a civil guard, but at the moment it does not work if you do not speak the language of the empire," says the text, which predicts that "if we spend so many hours talking with these utensils in Spanish, it will be one more defeat for our language, more significant than the one we suffer day by day in the Administration of Justice or on the cinema billboard ».

In the Valenciano exam , a news story appeared in the Levante newspaper about a Council of Europe report that says that the Valencian "is in a worrying situation, especially within the framework of the State Administration and the judicial system" , and that the 2018 regional law "makes immersion impossible", while recounting how several associations submitted a report to the Generalitat's Office for Language Rights to "make visible the discrimination suffered by Valencian-speaking citizens in the Valencian Country " . "They do not lose the opportunity to put their ideology, not even in a Selectivity exam," denounced yesterday on Twitter by the autonomous deputy of Citizens Toni Cantó .

The "indoctrination" of the Balearic text was pointed out by the associations Plis Educación and Nos Movem , while Vox announced that it will ask the Balearic Government for explanations, for introducing "radical Catalanism" to "indoctrinate and manipulate" children between 17 and 18 years. The regional deputy of Cs Patricia Guasp also condemned the use of an article "with a clear ideological and identity bias."

In the case of the Balearic Selectivity, the questions were not limited to a syntactic and morphological analysis of the text, but also asked to speak on "The linguistic conflict: minorization and normalization".

Professor Julián Ruiz-Bravo , spokesman for Plis Educación, denounces that, in recent years, the Selectividad has asked - with a score of two points out of 10 - for topics of "Catalan sociolinguistics", where there is talk of minorization and marginalization of Catalan, «which has become an essential subject of the subject». These contents are also included in the textbooks, where a narrative has been constructed in which "languages do not coexist peacefully, but there is always one aggressive language and another that is attacked" and "a linguistic conflict is created", because it ensures that "the increased use of Spanish decreases the use of Catalan".

All these contents are reproduced later in the Selectividad. The article speaks of "one more defeat for our language" and denounces that its speakers, the inhabitants of the " Catalan countries ", "suffer day by day" in the courts or in theaters, facing the supremacy of Spanish, which is the language of the "empire".

The University of the Balearic Islands limited itself to stating that the questioned text reflects the opinion of an article writer in the Catalan language, but not the opinion of the campus, and expressed that the vice-rector in charge of the tests would not make evaluations because she was pending the development of the exams.
