China News Agency, Washington, July 9 (Reporter Chen Mengtong) Mexican President Lopez visited the White House on the 8th to meet with US President Trump. The focus of the meeting between the leaders of the United States and Mexico is to jointly celebrate the US-Mexico-Canada agreement that came into effect recently.

The "US-Mexico-Canada Agreement" (referred to as the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement), which aims to update and replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, came into effect on July 1.

American media said that this was Lopez’s first foreign visit since he took office in December 2018, and also his first meeting with Trump. According to analysis, Lopez's visit is intended to reiterate the importance of the US-Mexico-Canada agreement in the complex economic period of Mexico, and strengthen cooperation with the US side in response to the new coronary pneumonia epidemic. The immigration issue is excluded from the visit agenda.

The US-Mexico Joint Communique issued after the meeting mainly mentioned the US-Mexico-Canada agreement and the two countries' epidemic response. The communique said that in 2019, Mexico will become the largest US merchandise trading partner for the first time. The US-Mexico-Canada agreement is an ideal tool for both parties to provide economic certainty and strengthen confidence, which is crucial for the economies that the two countries have begun to recover.

Since March this year, in response to the new coronary pneumonia epidemic, the United States has closed its land borders with Mexico and Canada, allowing only necessary travel and trade circulation. The communiqué said, "In responding to unprecedented health, safety and economic challenges, the two sides will continue to coordinate closely."

Trump said at the signing ceremony of the joint communiqué that the US-Mexico-Canada agreement has taken relations between the two countries to new heights and established a strong economic and security partnership. "We have jointly solved many of the most complex problems facing the two countries, which have not been resolved for many years."

Lopez said that the US-Mexico agreement will strengthen the economy of North America, help the integration of the region and enhance economic strength.

Lopez is a left-wing leader in the Mexican political spectrum. He had previously criticized the Trump administration's immigration policy. After being elected, Lopez had expressed that he hoped to maintain mutual respect with the United States and protect the interests of Mexican immigrants in the United States.

In May 2019, in order to pressure Mexico to solve the problem of illegal immigration, Trump threatened to increase tariffs on all Mexican exports to the United States every month. The two sides reached an agreement thereafter, and Mexico agreed to take strong measures to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the United States.

"Washington Post" believes that the US-Mexico bilateral relations have been strained by immigration issues in recent years, and the positive comments made by the leaders of the two sides on the other day were "surprising".

After the abolition of the "DACA Deferred Repatriation Program for Childhood Arrivals" (DACA) was dismissed by the US Supreme Court in June, the Trump administration is currently preparing to reopen the lawsuit. Most of the beneficiaries of the program come from Latin American countries, of which more than 510,000 are from Mexico.

The US "Capitol Hill" quoted experts as saying that the outside world is looking forward to Lopez's fulfillment of his campaign promises, but it remains to be seen whether he will eventually become Trump's "cooperator" on immigration and other issues. (Finish)
