6,342 contaminations and 259 deaths per 7 million inhabitants. With restrictions imposed since the appearance of the first cases of Covid-19 in early March, Bulgaria is one of the European countries least affected by the epidemic. However, faced with the recent increase in infections, the government announced Thursday new measures, including the closed-door for football as well as all sports competitions, outdoor and indoor, and the closure of the interior spaces of the boxes night.

"The new cases registered have not stopped increasing over the past ten days, exceeding the critical threshold of 200 in twenty-four hours," said Minister of Health Kiril Ananiev at a press conference. An upward trend is possible in the coming days. On Wednesday, Austria introduced a quarantine period for Bulgarians wishing to enter its territory, as did Slovenia, Slovakia and the Baltic countries.

The lifting of restriction measures since June 10 and weak control over distancing have led to a significant increase in new daily cases, the number of which reached 240 on Thursday. Dozens of patients were notably detected among the players and staff of four Ligue 1 clubs and among the supporters who celebrated on July 1 the victory of Lokomotiv Plovdiv against CSKA Sofia in the final of the Bulgarian Cup, played in front of 12,000 spectators .

While nightclubs and open-air bars will remain open and parties will be limited to thirty participants, the Ministry of Health has promised "very strict control" of the distance and wearing of the mask. Masks are compulsory in public transport, shops and any other closed space, but many Bulgarians wear them down.
