In a rare public interview of its kind, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented on Wednesday that US efforts to counter the emerging Corona virus had faltered.

Trudeau said that his country responded to the pandemic better than many of its allies, including the United States of America, noting that the situation is stabilizing despite the presence of some hot spots.

Canada has so far recorded 8,711 deaths, 106,167 injuries.

In contrast, the United States recorded more than 3 million injuries and 131,000 deaths. The authorities have released reports of alarming daily increases in nearly 20 states over the past two weeks.

"We have managed to control the virus better than many of our allies, including our neighbors in particular," the Canadian prime minister said at a news conference, adding that this would help in efforts to revitalize the economy.

Canada has a tenth of the population of the United States, or about 37 million people. The two countries have banned unnecessary travel between them since last March, and they are discussing whether to extend the ban when it expires on July 21.

Although Trudeau's relations with US President Donald Trump have been good for the past 18 months, he has not attended a meeting in Washington on Wednesday to announce the start of a new continental trade agreement with the United States and Mexico.

Trudeau expressed renewed concerns about the possibility of US tariffs on Canadian aluminum exports.
