"And what about the Egyptians?" Thus, the pioneers of social networking sites in Egypt wonder about the fate of the detainees who do not hold a foreign nationality, enabling them to be free from the tragedies of Egyptian prisons.

On Monday, the Egyptian authorities released an American medical student of Egyptian origin, Mohamed Amasha, 24, after more than a year in prison, after he gave up Egyptian citizenship, as well as American pressure.

"We thank Egypt for the release and deportation of Mohamed Amasha, and we call on the Egyptian authorities to release the remaining detainees," said US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

On April 24, Pompeo urged his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, to maintain the safety of Americans detained in Egypt from the Corona virus, including Amasha.

Jim Riche, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the US House of Representatives, congratulated Mohamed Amasha on his release from Egyptian prisons and his return to the United States, calling on the Egyptian regime to release political detainees who suffer from inhuman conditions in light of the outbreak of the Corona virus, stressing that he personally raised the issue of Americans being unjustly detained with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Egyptian last week.

Amasha was arrested in Cairo last spring after protesting in Tahrir Square and carrying a sign reading "Freedom for all prisoners," and authorities accused him of misusing social media and aiding a terrorist group.

In protest of his arbitrary arrest, Amasha has been on hunger strike since last March. His father expressed his fear of the spread of the Corona virus in Egyptian prisons, pointing out that his son has an immune and asthma disease.

Amasha's health sparked fear that he would end up like the Egyptian-American Mustafa Qassem, whose death after a hunger strike in the same prison where Amasha was arrested, caused American criticism of Cairo.

Last April, US Senator Chris Murphy called for the release of Amasha, warning against the repetition of the tragedy of Mustafa Qassem, as there are six American political prisoners in Egyptian prisons that have a poor human rights record, and they face the risk of death under the eyes of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The senator confirmed that he would continue to press for a tougher stance on US military aid to Cairo.

Muhammad Amasha spent 486 days in prison unjustly, raising a sign that read "Freedom for the detainees" on Tahrir Square.

On Monday, he arrived in America and threw himself in the arms of his family for the first time in 16 months.

"Muhammad returned to the United States on Monday and to his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, to be with his loved ones," said the human rights defender Freedom Initiative.

The initiative's chairman, Mohamed Sultan, revealed that Amasha was forced to withdraw his Egyptian citizenship in exchange for his freedom, knowing that Sultan himself had renounced Egyptian citizenship in exchange for his release years ago.

It is noteworthy that the Egyptian authorities had released a few days ago, the Canadian Canadian citizen, Yasser El-Baz, about a week after the phone call made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, demanding his release.

A statement from the El-Baz family stated that Yasser, 51, arrived in Toronto last Thursday after his release from Tora prison in Egypt, after spending nearly 500 days in prison without charges, at a time when the Canadian Foreign Ministry welcomed his release and return to his family.

What about the Egyptians?

The release of Amasha and El-Baz re-inquired about the fate of thousands of Egyptian detainees who do not hold a foreign nationality, and singers said that abandoning Egyptian nationality has become the last option for detainees to be released from Sisi prisons, which lack the lowest essentials of life.

Dozens of detainees inside Egyptian prisons hold other nationalities, and in some cases, foreign passports saved their owners from the clutches of the prison, but they failed with others, so they faced death or continued living inside the cells.

Last December, Human Rights Monitor considered - in a report - the Egyptian citizen with dual nationality, especially if it was a Western country, a fortunate person.

The organization said that foreign nationality can provide an opportunity for freedom for the Egyptian detainee, noting the conditions of the detainees inside the detention facilities known to not conform to the specifications.
