US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was studying the possibility of banning the Chinese application TikTok, in the context of strong tensions between Washington and Beijing. "This is something we are studying," said Donald Trump in an interview with host Greta Van Susteren.

Tiktol launches platform for SMEs

"It is a huge market," he said, without giving further details but simply indicating that it was "one of the many options" under study.

Despite these threats, TikTok announced Wednesday the launch of a platform allowing SMEs to create advertising clips specific to the application. TikTok, acclaimed by the youngest thanks to its videos around humor, dance and music, belongs to the Chinese group ByteDance and has nearly a billion users worldwide.

Suspicions of espionage

The White House tenant once again strongly denounced China's attitude to the Covid-19 pandemic. "What they have done to our country and to the world is a shame," he said. Donald Trump's statements echo that of Mike Pompeo, the head of American diplomacy, who said that Washington was examining the ban of several Chinese applications, including TikTok, against a backdrop of suspicion of spying.

The platform has often had to defend itself from its links with China. "TikTok is run by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and executives (…) here in the United States," said a spokesperson for the group, quoted by the Bloomberg news agency. "We have never provided user data to the Chinese government and we would not do so if asked to," he added.

Regarding its new TikTok For Business platform, Tik Tok clearly expects "its community known for its creativity, inventiveness and good humor" to attract companies looking for a young audience. These efforts should allow TikTok to compete with its elders in this very profitable niche, whether it be Facebook, YouTube or Twitter.
