The entrance to the Gare du Nord. - F. Pouliquen / 20 Minutes

It is fast becoming the hot summer file. The state's decision to issue the building permit for the commercial component of the Gare du Nord transformation project is "unquestionably a denial of democracy", lambasted the first deputy mayor of Paris Emmanuel Grégoire on Wednesday, accusing the government to "pass in force".

The Paris municipality is opposed to this "totally oversized project" and indicated that it would continue to do so "in a political and legal manner", without however specifying what would be the "strategy" adopted in the matter.

"It is not or will no longer be a station"

Tuesday, Emmanuel Grégoire had estimated that the government had "invented a Notre-Dame-des-Landes in full Paris" by taking this decision.

The project, supported by a joint venture created by SNCF Gares & Connexions and Ceetrus, Auchan's real estate company, is valued at 600 million euros. It plans in particular the construction of shops, offices and cultural facilities within the first station in Europe, 155 years old and frequented by 700,000 travelers every day - a figure that is set to increase.

"It is not or it will no longer be a station, but a shopping center with incidentally a station inside, and we are at the heart of the opposition that characterizes our relationship with the State" on the subject, explained Anne Hidalgo's first assistant, whom he said was "very dissatisfied" with the issuance of the building permit.

"It is in conscience that the decision has been made"

"It was enough that the prefect did not issue this permit and that the parties appealed gracefully, and we gained two months" to discuss the project, he added, saying that "it is therefore aware that the decision has been made. " Emmanuel Grégoire also considered that the timetable for the renovation, which must be completed for the 2024 Olympic Games, was "not credible and not serious".

"I challenge Ceetrus to prove myself (that the deadlines are credible, note) by producing site plans, to which we do not have access," replied Emmanuel Grégoire.
