The heatwave came early this year. We had a warm period in June, but in July it turned to rain and debris in large parts of the country.

What really happened?

- Right now we have high pressure over much of Europe and the continent south of us with warm air, really hot air and over northern Europe it is chilly. Between the warm and cool air lies the jet stream, which is strong winds in the higher atmosphere, which controls low pressure coming in from the west, says Deana Bajic, meteorologist at SVT.

In June a high pressure dominated northern Europe and its counterpart, the low pressure, has been further south over central Europe with a lot of rain and showers.

- Winter was mild in the southern half of the country this year, which in turn, often but not always, leads to an early summer start. Otherwise, July and August are usually warmer than June, says Deana Bajic.

"It's unusually cold"

The first week in July has been cold, very cold. According to Deana Bajic, it is 4 to 5 degrees cooler than normal. It is mainly from Dalarna and north that you notice the cooler air.

- It is usually not as cold as we have had it now the first week in July. If this persists, it will be record-breaking cold. Because it's unusually cold.

There is still hope for everyone who has a holiday in July, because already in the middle of next week a high pressure can pull over Sweden.

- But then I do not talk about 30 degrees, but then it is 20 degrees and a little more, and it gets a little drier weather. Then it depends on whether this high pressure holds, says Deana Bajic.

It will be another heat wave

July is usually the month you measure the highest temperature of the year, do you think we will see it this year or have we already had that high temperature in June?

- I can't say that but probably we will get another heat wave.

But you still hope that it will be warm again?

- Yes, we will have another period of heat wave.
