Defense Minister Margarita Robles has criticized Pablo Iglesias' attacks on the media on Wednesday and has completely distanced himself from the line that the second vice president and Podemos leader has started to defend himself against the Dina case .

"I do not share with Pablo Iglesias the one who justifies the insults," the minister has explicitly said, referring to the statements made by the vice president from La Moncloa, in which he stated that it was necessary to "naturalize" the "insults" to the journalists in the media. "Insults are never justifiable," the Defense Minister has remarked, "neither in a democratic society, nor on [social] networks, or anywhere else." On the contrary, "the media are the oxygen of democracy; I do not share the criticisms and disqualifications that are made of the media," he said.

Margarita Robles 'demonstrations place her in opposition to Pablo Iglesias' attempt to implicate the Government in his defense in the Dina case . This judicial investigation was promoted by Podemos in the 2019 electoral context to defend that the party was the victim of an attempt by a sector of the Police and the media to prevent his coming to power. This is what Iglesias himself calls "police and media sewers." The case, however, has evolved very differently. The investigation has not been able to prove that the phone card of the former adviser to Pablo Iglesias, Dina Bousselham , was stolen by that alleged police mafia to harm Podemos by disclosing its content in the media. On the contrary, it has verified that Iglesias himself had that card in his possession and saw its content without communicating it to Bousselham, which is why the judge has withdrawn his status as injured in the case.

Beyond these facts, information published by EL MUNDO has revealed that the objective of Podemos in the case was to be able to appear as a victim of these alleged "sewers" ahead of the 2019 general elections and that the party's own lawyers warned about the risks of supporting that thesis without any proof.

The reaction of Iglesias to this turn of events has been to attack the media that publish this information, with EL MUNDO at the forefront, and involve the Government in its defense. If in 2019 the thesis was that the alleged "sewers" wanted to prevent his coming to power, in 2020 the thesis is that those same "sewers" want to oust Podemos from power.

Margarita Robles, however, does not seem to agree with all this, much less justify the insults to politicians and journalists. "We must build a society based on respect, tolerance and always build bridges, criticism is very healthy in democracy, but insults are not acceptable. The media are the oxygen of democracy. I do not share criticism and disqualifications they are made to the media, "he said.

The Defense Minister is the first member of the Government to publicly distance himself from Pablo Iglesias in this matter. The vice president began his attacks on journalists for this matter last Friday, when he pointed out, among others, to Antena 3 news presenter Vicente Vallés , whom he called "alleged journalists". He continued the weekend with more attacks from himself and other party members, such as Pablo Echenique , and culminated on Tuesday at the press conference after the Council of Ministers. Three socialist ministers sat next to him, who listened to the attacks by churches without putting any problem: the spokesperson, María Jesús Montero ; that of Development and Secretary of Organization of the PSOE, José Luis Ábalos , and that of Justice, Juan Carlos Campo .

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez , has not corrected his vice-president, despite the fact that the professional associations of journalists and the opposition have asked him to do so.
