  • Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro, positive for Covid-19

The Brazilian Press Association (ABI) announced yesterday that it will file a lawsuit before the Supreme Court against the country's president, Jair Bolsonaro, whom he accuses of "endangering" the lives of the journalists who accompanied the announcement of his positive statement to the new coronavirus.

"Despite knowing that he was infected, President Jair Bolsonaro continues to act criminally and endanger other people's lives," ABI President Paulo Jerónimo de Sousa said in a statement.

De Sousa denounced that the president "broke the isolation recommended by the doctors" and "received journalists from media outlets that he considers related" to his policies to "personally inform them" that he is infected with the pathogen.

The 65-year-old head of state and one of the most skeptical leaders about the severity of the disease, appeared with a simple white mask and without respecting the safety distance with the informants, who during the appearance held their microphones near their mouths. covered by the ruler.

Almost at the end of his speech, Bolsonaro took a few steps back to get away a few meters from the journalists and took off his mask in order to pronounce one last word.

For the ABI, the president's attitude violated article 131 of the Brazilian Penal Code, which he punishes for "transmitting to others a serious illness of which he is infected" or "an act capable of producing contagion" , under penalty of one to four years in prison and fine.

The association (ABI, in its acronym in Portuguese) considered that the ruler also violated article 132 by "exposing the life or health of others to direct and imminent danger . " "It is not possible for the country to attend without reaction to successive behaviors that go beyond irresponsibility and configure clear crimes against public health," added De Sousa.

Latin American epicenter of the pandemic

The far-right leader, who has underestimated the severity of the pandemic since the start of the health crisis and has contradicted health recommendations on many occasions, confirmed the infection yesterday after presenting some symptoms, such as 38ºC of fever and muscle pain.

However, he noted that he is "perfectly fine" and reported that he is being treated with chloroquine, an antimalarial drug whose efficacy against the virus is not scientifically proven, but which he defends as a safe remedy against the disease.

During the crisis, the president described the coronavirus as "influenza" , attended demonstrations and walked through Brasilia several times, causing crowds, because, he says, his duty is "to be with the people."

Brazil is the Latin American epicenter of the pandemic and the second country hardest hit by the coronavirus, after the United States, registering 1.66 million infections and nearly 67,000 deaths , with 1,254 deaths in the last day.
