The appointment of Gérald Darmanin in Place Beauvau continues to be controversial. For his first day in his new interior hat, the current mayor of Tourcoing had to face Tuesday the anger of feminists who call for the resignation of the minister targeted by a rape complaint. However if Emmanuel Macron and Jean Castex expected this opposition by choosing it, the surprise came from old tweets by Gérald Darmanin on the marriage between people of the same sex who have resurfaced opening criticisms on another front.
Feminist action during the handover
Tuesday was punctuated by punching actions, which overshadowed the minister's first trip to a police station in Les Mureaux (Yvelines), in tribute to the two police officers killed in 2016 at their Magnanville home. The first action took place during the handover of power when about twenty feminists tried to approach the gates of the ministry, before being stopped by the police. Chanting "Darmanin resignation" and "Darmanin rapist", they held up signs indicating: "Darmanin inside, you are waking up to our complaints".
Then in front of the Elysee Palace where the first Council of Ministers of the new government was held, three Femen activists managed to approach the presidential palace before being removed from it. Later, in front of the Madeleine church, around fifty activists from the #Noustoutes collective, dressed in black, proceeded to the symbolic burial of equality between men and women, declared by the executive to be "great cause of the quinquennium" . At the end of this gathering, roses were placed in front of a coffin overhung by a giant black eagle on which was inscribed the name of the new minister. "The rape culture is on the move," chanted the activists.
A trip to the Lot-et-Garonne
The end of the day was no quieter for Gérald Darmanin. For his first trip to the provinces as Minister of the Interior, he went to the village of Port-Sainte-Marie, in Lot-et-Garonne, to pay tribute to the young gendarme killed on Saturday evening by an unlicensed driver who wanted to avoid a traffic check.
