• Mexico: López Obrador arrives at the White House on his first trip abroad as President of Mexico

The Presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, met today in Washington in a meeting with little agenda, in which the second, by the mere fact of attending, demonstrated the tremendous influence that the neighbor del Norte has the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. López Obrador himself referred to the meeting, appealing to political realism when he stated that "I want to maintain a good friendship with the United States, that is what is convenient for us . " Trump, for his part, tweeted that the meeting "will be a great meeting," and called López Obrador a "good man" and a "friend of mine."

The only declared objective of the meeting was to celebrate the new Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC), which in practice is only a minimum reform of the Free Trade Agreement in force between the three countries since 1994. The third signatory, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, did not attend, citing reasons for the agenda, although the real reasons seem to have to do more with his bad personal relationship with Donald Trump and with Ottawa's irritation with López Obrador, of which it considers that it was not a loyal partner when negotiating on its own with Washington during the Treaty.

Little else was on the agenda. The Mexican Government had declared that Lopez Obrador - colloquially known by the initials of his name, AMLO - was going to ask Trump's support for the candidacy of his advisor Jesús Seade for the leadership of the World Trade Organization (WTO), a position to which finally the Spanish Government has decided not to present the candidacy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya. Seade, who has negotiated the T-MEC for Mexico, has an excellent relationship with the United States representative of International Trade - a position equivalent to that of Secretary of Foreign Trade - Robert Lighthizer.

The two leaders were also going to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation against Covid-19 , which is totally out of control in both countries. In fact, one of the few things that Trump and AMLO totally agree on is the decision not to stop economic activity in their countries despite the impact of the pandemic. The United States is the country that has officially recognized the most deaths from the coronavirus, and Mexico the fourth.

Tourist class

True to form, AMLO had arrived in Washington in the economy class of a normal commercial jetliner, albeit with a seat in an emergency exit, leaving more room for stretching his legs. Since the Covid-19 has suspended direct flights between the United States and the Mexican capital, it had to change flights on its route to the White House, although it was fortunate that its plane finally arrived at Dulles airport, 40 miles from Washington, 20 minutes early. The Mexican president went through customs procedures like any other traveler, and finally arrived at the terminal where his country's ambassador to the United States, Martha Bárcenas, was waiting for him.

López Obrador's unusual trip is part of his hallmark. The Mexican president refuses much of the paraphernalia proper to the heads of state and government, such as, for example, carrying an escort, so the fact that he has not used an official plane is normal for him.

What is not normal is that AMLO travels outside the country. In fact, this is the first since he became President , more than a year and a half ago. To date, the head of the Mexican State had stated that he preferred to stay in his country, with its citizens, and had sent his foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, to represent him at summits and other international events.
