Citizen MEP Maite Pagazaurtundúa has denounced to the European Union the "campaign of harassment by members of the Government of Spain, the media and specific journalists", as a result of the scandal in which the vice president has recently been involved from the Government, Pablo Iglesias, for the retention of the personal card of a collaborator's mobile phone and the possible illegal use of the data and private photos it contained.

Pagazaurtundúa, who is vice-president of the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, has denounced that the attacks by Iglesias on the press and journalists "could lead to a violation of the principles of impartiality, independence and non-discrimination that should govern action and behavior. of the Government and its members, whose respect is key to guarantee the health of our democratic systems. " It has also stressed that "respect for the freedoms of expression and information in the media is essential in the rule of law, as stated in the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and our Constitution." And she pointed out that "the fact that the vice president stresses that she considers it necessary to naturalize the insult and the attack on the press makes it necessary to avoid the desired degradation of our democracy."

The MEP has also addressed the President of the Transparency and Good Governance Council and the Spanish Ombudsman to send them the complaint of these attacks. And to underline that "the 'Spanish Law on Transparency, Access to Public Information and Good Governance' clearly establishes the ethical and performance principles that should govern the work of the executive and the applicable infractions and sanctions regime in case of not doing so, which includes the dismissal of the public office involved. "

The former UPyD leader, now in the Cs Group in Europe, added in conversation with this newspaper that "the press is a strategic sector that must be respected and supported to preserve the sense of its control work and, therefore, , to guarantee the quality of democracies ". In his letter to the Justice Commissioner, Vra Jourová, he asked him if "he considers that the media should be protected in order to have the necessary freedom to exercise adequate control over the Government's action and over potential crimes linked to people who are in the Executive. "

"The leaders of parties in the Government should not be tempted to limit the work of the media," which is why it has proposed "to include in the EU Action Plan for Democracy the analysis of freedom of expression. , as well as the issues of pluralism and media freedom in the 21st century. "

According to Pagaza, "this conduct would be contrary to the aforementioned principles for not respecting the Constitution and carrying out discriminatory behavior based on convictions or ideology or abuse of authority in the exercise of office, among others." For this reason, he ended by asking the leaders if "they are going to initiate any type of investigation to clarify the nature, intention and possible consequences of the statements made by the second vice-president of the Government of Spain, Pablo Iglesias."
