On July 30, 2019, the perpetrator's car breaks down in Markaryd. They are towed to a gas station at the resort where they stay for a day. The two perpetrators together with two fellow passengers are then on their way up to Västerbotten to pick berries.
On July 31, the 70-year-old reportedly disappeared when he did not return home after a visit to the hairdresser in central Markaryd. The car, a Volvo, has also disappeared. Later the same day, a bus driver notices Volvon who he sees has registration plates belonging to a truck. He suspects the car is stolen and contacts the police.
On August 10, the 70-year-old is found dead in a forest area in Hannabad outside Markaryd. Police suspect murder and start an investigation. The perpetrators, together with their travel companions, have come up to Adak in Västerbotten where they meet the person responsible for picking berries. A conflict arises and they leave the scene. But one of the fellow travelers stays and says that something is not right and that they have not been asked questions about how they got the car. In this way, the police get the identity of the perpetrators.
On August 14, the two now convicted men are arrested in their absence and are wanted internationally.
On August 20 , one of the men in Germany is arrested. The man is arrested on suspicion of murder and car theft. At the same time, the police confirm that the 70-year-old's car was seen in the districts of Malå in Västerbotten and a voting card belonging to the 70-year-old is found in the forest in Malå.
In December 2019, the second man in Poland is arrested after being internationally wanted for several months. He is also being arrested on suspicion of the same crime.
On May 8, 2020, a lawsuit was filed in which both men were indicted for murder or gross manslaughter and gross mischief to the death of another and the assault of means of residence. One of the men is also charged with attempted fraud after trying to withdraw money with the 70-year-old's ATM card.
On May 20, the trial started. It ended on June 23.
On July 7 , the two perpetrators are sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and assault. One of them is also convicted of attempted fraud. Both should be expelled from Sweden.
