  • Pandemic: The border between the two most populous states in Australia is closed due to an outbreak in Melbourne

The authorities decreed on Tuesday a new confinement of the inhabitants of Melbourne, the second most populous city in Australia, with about five million inhabitants, to stop the expansion of the new coronavirus.

The confinement will begin at midnight and will last at least six weeks, said Victoria State Prime Minister Daniel Andrews. "We can't pretend" that the covid-19 pandemic ended, Andrews said in explaining the decision.

The confinement announcement came after it was disclosed that in the past 24 hours there were 191 new cases of covid-19 in the city.

"Those numbers cannot last," said Andrews.

"Nobody wants to be in such a situation," said the official, who acknowledged that accepting these restrictions "will be very difficult" for the population.

The new confinement provides for the closure of educational centers , which will force most students to follow their classes online.

For its part, restaurants and cafes may only sell food and drinks to go.

This is the only possible decision because otherwise "potentially" there will be "thousands and thousands of" additional cases, Andrews told reporters.

The new confinement of the inhabitants of Melbourne adds to the isolation of the state of Victoria, which closed its borders with the rest of the country since Tuesday morning.

Police and military control dozens of border points and the security forces deployed planes and drones to control that the isolation is respected.

To date, the authorities have decreed partial confinements in Melbourne affecting 300,000 inhabitants.

Confinement should last in principle until July 29.

These restrictions are the strictest in Australia since the pandemic began in December. Australia recorded more than 9,000 coronavirus cases and 109 deaths. Currently, most covid-19 cases are concentrated in Melbourne. In the other regions of the country, the authorities are beginning to ease the restrictions adopted to fight the pandemic.
