Over the years, there have been a lot of reports of egg thieves plundering rare bird species' nests. Stekenjokk, a valuable breeding ground, on the border between Västerbotten and Jämtland, has been particularly vulnerable.

Although it has been fairly quiet about the area in recent years, the crime continues and has worked to put an end to it.

- This year we have at least five registration numbers that are very interesting that we will check up on, says Håkan Berglund, nature guard at the County Administrative Board of Jämtland, who is in constant service to stop egg thieves together with the police.

Thousands of kronor

He says it is often difficult to distinguish egg thieves from ordinary bird lovers. But the owners of the five cars he thinks are interesting should be notorious among bird lovers when it comes to stealing eggs.

In order not to help the egg thieves, Håkan Berglund does not want to give too much information, such as which bird species nest in the area and what the price tag for rare eggs is, but it is about thousands of kronor.

- They don't understand that they're destroying. You just have to look around to understand how difficult it is to get a nest up here and if they are to keep and steal eggs it becomes even more difficult.

In 2014, a man was sentenced to one year in prison for stealing eggs in, among others, Stekenjokk. The picture comes from the police investigation and the points show where the eggs should have been stolen. Photo: Police
