A man on the run, sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment for the assassination of his ex-girlfriend, near Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), was arrested Monday morning in Gard, just in time for his appeal trial, has learned AFP with the National Fugitive Research Brigade (BNRF).

His arrest allowed him to be present in the accused's box in Montpellier (Hérault), on the first day of his trial at the Hérault assize court, which started half a day late. The 50-year-old man was released in January with judicial review because he has been awaiting appeal for more than two years, more than the "reasonable time" set by law.

Arrested in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon

At first instance, he was sentenced in October 2017 to 30 years' imprisonment by the Perpignan assize court for the abduction, forcible confinement and murder of his ex-wife, mother of three children, in September 2013, in Céret (Pyrénées-Orientales).

He had respected his judicial review until June, a few days before his appeal trial. He was arrested in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (Gard) Monday morning by the BRI in Montpellier, it was added to the BNRF.
