Fernando Alonso, double Spanish Formula 1 world champion, will return to the discipline in 2021 after signing a contract with French automaker Renault, the BBC said on Tuesday.

Contacted by AFP, Renault did not confirm this information.

Fernando Alonso, 38, would thus return to the F1 circuits from which he has been distant since the end of 2018, after four years without glory at McLaren.

World champion in 2005 and 2006 with Renault before making a first visit to McLaren, the Spanish driver then returned to Renault before spending five years at Ferrari without managing to win a new title.

Renault is looking to replace the Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who will join McLaren next season, where he awaits a contract of "several years".
