China News Service, July 7th, according to the European Union quoted the European Union News Agency, recently, a large number of dead fish floating on the water or the shore suddenly appeared in the Olona River in northern Italy. The incident triggered panic among some urban residents along the coast. Some residents worry that river pollution will result in the death of a large number of aquatic organisms, and some even suspect that the dead fish is related to the new coronavirus. At present, the Italian State Environmental Protection Agency, the police and the health and epidemic prevention department have been involved in the investigation.

On the evening of July 3 local time, the Italian epidemic prevention department received the first report from the "Friends of Olona" (Amici dell'Olona) environmental organization. The organization also posted many photos and videos of dead fish on social media platforms.

Video data shows that there are many dead fish floating on the surface of the Olona River, especially from the coast of Castellanza to Legnano. Local residents have reported fish deaths for several days.

At present, the Italian National Environmental Protection Agency, in cooperation with the police and the health and epidemic prevention department, has launched an investigation into the death of a large number of aquatic organisms caused by pollution of the Olona River. Scientific research institutions have collected water samples to start analyzing toxic substances and carry out technical assessments of the causes of death of aquatic animals.

Experts preliminarily speculated that it is likely that some illegal toxic substance was directly discharged into the river channel, causing river water pollution and causing the death of aquatic organisms. For specific reasons, the relevant departments are conducting further investigations. (Boyuan)
