It was after 18 car fires occurred in the course of a week in Södra Ryd that the police decided to introduce limited time camera surveillance in the area. The police have now decided to continue surveillance for another four months, and to use drones for surveillance for six months.

"We see it as part of the long-term work we do in the area," says Fredrik Malm, acting head of the Skaraborg police area.

Quiet since May

Since the camera surveillance was introduced in Södra Ryd in early May, the situation has improved significantly. Camera surveillance is also a tool for finding people who have committed crimes, should something happen.

Doesn't this mean that some crimes continue, but elsewhere?

- It can do that. But it is also important that the crimes move from places where there are a lot of people. Business, housing and public transport need to be a safe place for the public, says Fredrik Malm.

Södra Ryd is the only area in Skaraborg where the police have camera surveillance.
