  • A photo supposed to show migrants arrested off Australia went viral within hours.
  • The image was taken out of context
  • It dates from 2012 and relates to a territorial conflict between China and Japan.

A boat surrounded and prevented from passing by two military ships. Judging by a photo that went viral in a few hours on social networks, Australia has brutally prohibited migrants from entering its territory.

“I present to you the Australian method to stop migrants. The boat loaded with stowaways had not responded to the warnings. Two naval ships therefore struck him to immobilize him. The illegal immigrants have all been expelled, ”said a Twitter user.

Australia: two military ships hit a barge loaded with migrants who did not respond to the summons. The illegal immigrants were all returned, the crew members arrested and the barge scrapped.

A statement and a photo originally launched on July 4 on the German site unser-mitteleuropa.com. A snapshot used to emphasize, according to the site, that the Australian government has put in place strict measures to fight illegal immigration.

FAKE OFF

Since 2013, the Australian government has successfully launched the “Sovereign Borders” operation which practices zero tolerance on refugee boats. They are forced to turn back if they are intercepted on the high seas.

Except that the photo used on social networks has nothing to do with this program. The reverse image search can be traced back to multiple articles that date back several years. The photo was taken on August 15, 2012, when two Japanese ships arrested Chinese activists who had just planted a flag of the Middle Kingdom on the island of Uotsuri. A Chinese flag that can be distinguished from the front of the boat circled in the photo. The action was even filmed in this video.

The island of Uotsuri is one of eight islets and rocks called the Senkaku Islands. They were mostly incorporated in Japan in 1895. But since 1971, they have been claimed by Taiwan and China. Hence these maritime tensions which therefore have nothing to do with Australian immigration.
