"Essential infrastructure". That is the name that the Villa Pacts give Mercamadrid after the coronavirus health crisis, where the logistics center has guaranteed at all times the supply of a confined city for several months. Hence, the agreement reached between the five municipal groups that make up the Plenum of the Madrid City Council chooses to establish a shield for this municipal space that allows "guarantee its future".

The first step in this shield is to establish "a working table with all the agents" that allows the time limit of the concession of the contract between Mercasa and the municipal corporation to be extended, which expires in 2032. According to municipal sources consulted by EL MUNDO , one of the dates considered for this expansion is the year 2050 , but in the Department of Economics of the City Council they indicate that the exact date "is not defined" although there will be "a significant extension" of the term.

Although the process, according to the sources, presents "legal complexities", in Cibeles they understand that it is possible to carry it forward and that this modification would cause the settlers' investments to grow since the extended time limit would allow them to amortize them. "These are very expensive investments that are difficult to recover in the period of time set until 2032," point out the department led by Miguel Ángel Redondo to justify the operation, which has the support of the rest of the political groups.

But the storm will not be the only expansion to be carried out in the future of the logistics center. Mercamadrid is already working on an extension of land , as confirmed by sources consulted by this newspaper, and has held a first meeting with the Urban Development Area to "order the proposals for use and future needs" on its land. The next step is for the distribution company to prepare a project for these lands and present it to the department headed by Mariano Fuentes.

This extension of land, however, raises doubts in one of the signatories of Los Pactos de la Villa, the PSOE, and is not included in the final agreement signed by all municipal groups. “We are in favor of giving legal certainty to companies and guaranteeing the extension of the concession. The main objective should be to make the temporary enlargement and the spatial expansion will be seen later ", explains the economic spokesperson for the socialists, Enma López.

For her part, the deputy mayor, Begoña Villacís, stresses the need to reinforce an infrastructure that she considers "key" for the future, as was demonstrated during the crisis with "her excellent work." “The merchants had no certainty that it would go beyond 2032 and there were uncertainties when it came to investing or requesting credit. We all expected this change because we believe in Mercamadrid that it has not failed us in this pandemic, ”argues the municipal number two.
