Wissant beach in Pas-de-Calais - BRUNO COLLIOT / SIPA

80 years later, the consequences of the war are still felt in the Hauts-de-France. This Monday, July 6, the people of the village of Wissant (Pas-de-Calais) were ordered to stay at home from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reason for the confinement of more than a thousand people in the middle of the summer? The clearance of three Rommel stakes, explosive devices installed by the Germans on the northern beaches during the Second World War.

Close the shutters to avoid the risk of glass breakage

A delicate operation, carried out by demining divers from the French Navy, which involves very specific rules. In addition to the ban on going out within a 1.5 km perimeter around the beach, residents will also be asked to open their windows and close the shutters to limit the risk of glass breakage. The municipal campsite of the seaside resort will also be evacuated and a hundred people should be welcomed in the communal room.
