Berlin (AP) - The SPD chairmen Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans do not see a reintroduction of conscription as a means to prevent right-wing extremist incidents in the Bundeswehr.

"Conscription is a recurring theme and is not related to the endangered democratic stability of individual areas of the Bundeswehr that have never been filled by conscripts," they said in Berlin on Saturday. They were obviously referring to the elite Command Special Forces unit (KSK), which is to be restructured after several incidents.

The new military commissioner Eva Högl (SPD) had launched a debate about the reintroduction of conscription against the background of right-wing extremism allegations. "I think it is a huge mistake that conscription has been suspended," she told the Funke newspapers. "We have to analyze this decision very critically." Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) announced a new voluntary service in the Bundeswehr on Saturday - she refused to return to compulsory military service.

The President of the Reservists Association, Patrick Sensburg (CDU), welcomed the move towards compulsory military service. "The suspension of compulsory military service was a mistake and I voted against it at the time," said the CDU member of the Bundestag to the "Handelsblatt". In the meantime, there has been "broad approval" in Germany for their reintroduction or for a general duty to serve. "It makes sense to combine this with the fundamental consideration of compulsory service."

Defense policy spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Rüdiger Lucassen, supported Högl's push “without ifs and buts” and said in a message: “But now it has to convince its party and the CDU. Reactivation is a big task, but possible. Sweden has shown that it can be done. »

In 2011, compulsory military service in Germany and thus civilian service were suspended. The Bundeswehr thus became a volunteer army. Voluntary military service lasts from 7 to 23 months.

According to Kramp-Karrenbauer's ideas, a new service will be introduced in the Bundeswehr from 2021 as a supplement to voluntary military service, under the title “Your Year for Germany”. Young people who opt for the service should receive six months of basic military training in their respective home countries and then be provided with reserve services close to home for six months.
