After Asia, Europe and America, will it be Africa's turn to experience a rapid and dramatic spread of the coronavirus? Fears are real today. South Africa on Saturday registered more than 10,000 new cases in the past 24 hours. This record raises fears of an outbreak of infections in the country.

Gradual loosening of containment

Some 10,853 new confirmed cases have been identified, bringing the total to 187,977 since March, according to the Ministry of Health. The death toll from the virus stood at 3,026, up 74 from the previous day. Above all, the health authorities expect a peak in contamination following the gradual loosening of the strict containment put in place on March 27.

The economy, for its part, is expected to contract by more than 7% this year, its sharpest fall in 90 years. "We have tried to find a balance (...) between saving the lives of our people and preserving their livelihoods and it is a delicate balance," said President Cyril Ramaphosa. South Africa, the most economically developed country on the continent, is also the one with the highest number of cases of contamination.
