Security sources reported that the Egyptian authorities arrested a man suspected of sexual assault on dozens of women yesterday, Saturday, after a campaign on social media that called on the authorities to take action.

Testimonies detailing "horrific" sexual assaults and sexual assaults committed by a person against many women in Egypt have been published on social media, which has angered internet users.

It is suspected that the detainee raped or attempted to rape and molest scores of women and girls, among whom was only a 14-year-old girl who had sexually assaulted her.

According to one of the testimonies published on Instagram on Wednesday, these sexual assaults occurred, starting at the very least in 2018.

A name and the name of the alleged perpetrator were also widely reported on Twitter and Facebook, and users of both sites called on the authorities to act.

A security source said, "The person accused of harassing these women has been arrested and will be prosecuted after the accusations leveled against him on social media."

He pointed out that "the persons concerned must present formal complaints" against the arrested person, without specifying his identity.
The Public Prosecution later announced the suspect's name, confirming that it had opened an investigation into the case.

The American University in Cairo said in a statement that the suspect was a student before he left in 2018.

For its part, the United Nations has indicated - in reports published in recent years - that the vast majority of Egyptian women have been victims of harassment.

Sexual harassment, verbal and physical, is still a common phenomenon in Egypt, despite the passage of a 2014 law criminalizing this behavior.
