The World Health Organization (WHO) said it has halted its trials of treating Covid-19 patients with malaria hydroxychloroquine and AIDS drug lopinavir / ritonavir after they failed to reduce deaths, while 200,000 infections were announced in one day.

The organization said in a statement that the preliminary results of the experiments indicate that hydroxychloroquine and lupinavir / ritonavir contribute very little to reducing the deaths of corona virus under treatment in hospitals, and confirmed that the researchers will stop the experiments immediately.

The United Nations organization indicated that the decision, taken on the recommendation of an international committee, does not apply to other studies related to their use outside the hospital or as a prevention.

Another aspect of the WHO-led trials examines the potential effect of Gilliad Sciences' remedies for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

The WHO-led trials, called Solidarity Experiments, started in five types in search of possible treatment components of Covid-19, namely: Standard Care, Remedivir, Hydroxychloroquine, Lopinavir-Ritonavir and Lopanivir-Ritonavir plus Interferon.

The Director-General of the International Health Organization, Tidros Adhanum Gebresos, said on Friday that about 5,500 patients in 39 countries have so far volunteered to conduct clinical trials on them, and that preliminary results are expected within two weeks.

About 18 Covid-19 experimental vaccines are being tested in humans, out of approximately 150 treatments being developed.

The WHO announcement that the two drugs will stop testing for malaria and AIDS comes at a time when the organization registered more than 200,000 new cases of Covid-19 worldwide in one day for the first time.

According to the "World Meter" website, which specializes in detecting corona victims around the world, the number of injuries has increased to 11,345,416 cases, 532,391 deaths, compared to 6 million, 421,483 cases of recovery.

These numbers only reflect part of the actual number of injuries, as many countries only conduct tests for the most serious cases, while other countries give priority to conducting tests to track contacts of the injured, and a number of poor countries have limited examination capabilities.

And the United States, which recorded the first death with Covid-19 in early February, is the country most affected by the number of deaths and injuries, with 129,584 deaths out of two million, 818 thousand and 588 injuries. At least 790,404 people were cured.

The health authorities in Florida, USA, said that the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus recorded a record daily increase of 11,458 yesterday, for the second time in three days when the number of infections exceeded 10,000 cases.

It comes after the United States in terms of the countries most affected by the epidemic, Brazil which recorded 63 thousand and 147 deaths out of a million and 539 thousand and 81 injuries, followed by the United Kingdom with 44 thousand and 198 deaths out of 284 thousand and 900 injuries, then Italy with 34 thousand and 854 deaths and 241 thousand and 419 Injured, and France, with 29,893 deaths, compared to 203,367 injuries.

European continent

In Europe, Spain re-imposed isolation on more than 200 thousand of its inhabitants in the Catalonia region while observing tens of new Corona virus hotspots in other regions, in parallel with a greater opening of its borders to foreign visitors.

With at least 28,385 deaths, Spain is one of the countries hardest hit by the Covid-19 epidemic, but the authorities see that it has succeeded in controlling its outbreak after a severe closure that lasted more than three months and covered the entire population before it was lifted on June 21.

According to data published by the Ministry of Health, the total number of injuries rose to 284,900, after 624 injuries were recorded in the last 24 hours.
