Protesters demolished this Saturday a statue of Christopher Columbus in the city of Baltimore , on the east coast of the United States, in a new episode of the wave of attacks on monuments or statues of historical figures linked to slavery and colonialism.

Protesters demolished the Columbus statue in Baltimore's Litte Italy neighborhood with the help of ropes, according to images released on the Baltimore Sun newspaper's website.

Since May 25, when protests began over the murder of African-American George Floyd, asphyxiated by a white police officer in Minneapolis, various groups of protesters have demolished numerous statues of characters linked to colonial history or discrimination. Others like those of Cervantes or Fray Junípero Serra have also suffered attacks.

Similar events have also occurred in other countries, particularly in the United Kingdom .

On July 4, independence day in the United States, President Donald Trump mentioned Columbus in a speech.

"We will fight together for the American dream and we will defend and protect and preserve the American way of life that began in 1492 when Christopher Columbus discovered America," said Trump, who attacked protesters who denounce racial discrimination.

"We are defeating the radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, and the agitators and looters," Trump said at a ceremony in the White House gardens.

"We will never allow an angry crowd to tear down our statues, erase our history and indoctrinate our children," he added.

Several statues of Christopher Columbus were knocked down or damaged, particularly in Boston, Miami, Richmond, and Camden.

For its part, the municipality of San Francisco removed a statue of the Genoese explorer from the seat of the local parliament.
