A 46-year-old detainee who was serving a sentence for domestic violence committed suicide on Friday in Montauban prison, in Tarn-et-Garonne, the prosecution said. The man, who suffocated while he was alone in his cell, died at the city hospital, where he had been transferred in critical condition, said the prosecutor, Laurent Czernik.
He had been condemned in April in immediate appearance to two years of prison of which fourteen months firm for acts of domestic violence. It was his co-detainee who gave the alert when he discovered him after returning from a walk, in the middle of the afternoon, said the prosecutor.
The remand center has 180 prisoners for 144 places. According to the prosecutor in office for two years, the second suicide in this establishment in this period.
