Before-after view where the mayor of Nice plans to replace the National Theater of Nice and the Acropolis palace with an extension of the green corridor - Estrosi2020 / Montage 20 Minutes

  • Christian Estrosi's list (LR) was elected on June 28 in the second round of municipal elections in Nice.
  • This Friday began his new term as head of the city.
  • The opportunity to take stock of the projects he wishes to carry out over the next six years.

He left for a third term with a majority (56 elected) renewed by half and a new first assistant. It is now Anthony Borré, his chief of staff for twelve years, who will assist Christian Estrosi, re-elected mayor of Nice on Friday by the municipal council, after his victory in the second round of the municipal elections.

The project for this new term will now be able to proceed. But with what major projects? 20 Minutes looks  back at the three flagship measures that await the people of Nice for the next six years.

The extension of the green flow and the destruction of TNN and Acropolis

"In agreement with its director and the Minister of Culture, the National Theater of Nice (TNN), which requires enormous and costly work to bring it up to standard, will be relocated [in the old Franciscan church], place Saint- François, and Acropolis, demolished, will be replaced by a modern exhibition center closer to the airport, "detailed Christian Estrosi, during his first meeting in January 2020.

The mayor, then candidate, had announced his desire to extend the green flow by shaving this equipment. A project confirmed a few days ago during an interview with 20 Minutes . The idea is therefore to continue the promenade du Paillon, inaugurated in late 2013 over 1.2 km long. This green space had already required the destruction of the old Nice bus station and its hanging gardens.

But this measure has received strong criticism. Of his new opposition, in particular. Jean-Marc Governatori, head of the Europe ecology-The Greens group, denounces an "ecological and financial disaster" and Philippe Vardon (National Rally) asks the mayor either to "give up the project" or to "question the people of Nice by organizing a local referendum ”.

The construction of a police station in the old Saint-Roch hospital

Another measure expected, that of establishing a police hotel bringing together municipal and national police in the same place: the old Saint-Roch hospital, in downtown Nice, built in the 19th century. A “pooling” project reaffirmed during his speech on the evening of his re-election on June 28.

The 36,000 m2 planned in the project must accommodate the departmental public security directorate, the border police, the judicial police, the departmental internal security directorate, but also the premises of the municipal police. A "hypervision center" must also bring together the video surveillance center of the city of Nice, the traffic regulation center and the town hall security command post. Sixty social housing units will also be allocated to police families.

But this project suffers from a significant delay. In 2017, the town hall presented it and announced the start of work in 2019 for delivery in 2022. However, they still have not started and should not start until 2022 (the odontology department of the CHU Nice yet to be relocated). The police station should therefore not be opened before 2024.

The cost of operations - estimated at 155 million euros in 2017 - concerns some elected officials. “The potential cost worries me, pointed out the elected EELV Fabrice Decoupigny before the municipal assembly. My arms are falling out because we are going to pay for equipment three times more expensive than elsewhere in France. In Lyon, the police station cost 37 million euros. "

The establishment of a health and environmental security agency

The project was launched as a priority, even before the end of the previous mandate and the start of the new one, driven by the coronavirus crisis. “Before the Covid, I wanted to spread this project over two or three years. We will finally put it in place right away, ”announced the mayor at 20 Minutes before the second round.

This Agency for health and environmental security and risk management is "an entity that will also take into account the terrorist threat, bad weather, increasingly hot summer, but also the seismic alert", he detailed. According to the mayor, it "will strengthen the ecological and economic attractiveness of Nice".
