The 14-year-old girl who died on Friday after falling from the canoe with which she made the descent of the Cares river , in Asturias, was from Madrid and was in a summer camp in the Cantabrian town of Comillas , which had scheduled different activities adventure throughout the day, as reported by the Civil Guard.

Twenty teenagers and four monitors had started the descent at around 4:00 p.m. and, about two hours later, the two-seater canoe in which the deceased girl was traveling along with another component of the group overturned when they reached an area of rocks and rapids , one kilometer from the town of Mildón , in the Asturian municipality of Peñamellera Alta.

After the overturn, both were fired and were submerged and only one of them floated without the search carried out by the monitors being successful, so one of them stayed in the area and the others continued their descent to withdraw the rest of the group and ask for help since the area, due to its orography, did not allow mobile phone coverage.

About 50 minutes later they managed to contact 112 by telephone to report what had happened and one of the monitors located , after 8:00 p.m., the body of the young woman semi-submerged among some rocks without being able to extract them to the surface.

Complicated intervention

Added to this difficulty was the fact that in that area the river runs sandwiched between the mountain and an almost vertical wall of about 50 meters, which made it necessary to move to the site of the Special Group for Underwater Activities ( GEAS ) and the Rescue Group. Mountain Intervention ( GREIM ).

After examining the area and cleaning the bushes to descend, the agents mounted a lifeline from a road safety guard to descend safely to the river and a zip line from one bank to the other, to serve as handrails. for divers given the strong current of the river to which was added the difficulty of the lack of light.

Two GEAS members with autonomous teams were able to get to the place where the girl's body was found among the rocks and extract it to later lift it up to Highway AS-114, where the forensic doctor was waiting, and then transfer them to the Institute of Legal Medicine from Oviedo, where the autopsy is performed.
