Elected with more than 65% of the vote on the evening of a second round marked by a record abstention, Nathalie Appéré officially took office on Friday. Candidate for his succession, the outgoing mayor was appointed on the occasion of an extraordinary municipal council. Chaired by opposition member Jean-Emile Gombert, dean of the assembly, the session took place in atypical conditions, due to the necessary social distancing between elected officials. "I will not hide the emotion that is mine from you," said the mayor at the start of her speech.

The mayor was elected by 51 votes out of 61, the whole of his majority. Nine of the ten opposition members of the groups of Carole Gandon and Charles Compagnon voted white. A bulletin "Edmond Hervé", named after the historic mayor of Rennes, mentor to Nathalie Appéré, was slipped into the ballot box, making a good part of the assembly smile.

From the rostrum, the new mayor delivered a speech inviting “the exemplarity” of elected officials, mentioning in passing the opposition group. "There is no democracy without counter-power," said the elected socialist, paying tribute to the former leaders of the right Bruno Chavanat and Bertrand Plouvier. The mayor has indicated that a deduction from compensation will be applied in the event of an unjustified absence from the municipal council or the commission. "A mandate dispossesses you of a part of yourself as much as it uplifts you," said the mayor.

For this second mandate, the socialist wishes to "protect Rennes and the Rennes". Protect "from a deep economic and social crisis" but also "protect the health of the inhabitants by preparing Rennes for potential new shocks". "We will keep our word," promised the mayor, who is committed to making Rennes "a city determined to support employment and economic activity to accelerate its ecological transition".
