  • Pandemic: Coronavirus does not stop drug traffickers from Campo de Gibraltar, but forces them to change their 'modus operandi'

For Antonio Tejón, one of the Castaña and leader of the clan of drug traffickers of the same name, half with his brother Isco, his freedom has not lasted even five minutes. In prison since 2018, the Cádiz Hearing agreed yesterday to release him after an error by the investigative court of La Línea de la Concepción in the processing of another case in which he is charged, but the Civil Guard did not allow him to cross the threshold of the Albolote prison (Granada) in which he was imprisoned and he was arrested again, this time in the context of an operation against money laundering from the sale of narcotic drugs.

According to sources from the Civil Guard, when Antonio Tejón was opened the doors of the Granada prison, a team of agents ready to arrest him was already waiting in the same compound. And so it happened. The leader of the Chestnut trees could neither greet nor see the relatives who were waiting for him outside the prison.

The so-called Gums operation is the one that has brought down, for the second time, one of the best-known and most important drug traffickers in the Campo de Gibraltar, who is now charged with an alleged crime of money laundering, another belonging to a criminal organization and a third of bribery, for allegedly having a paid agent from the armed institute assigned to the Algeciras Command and who has also been arrested. This is an investigation that started from another anti-money laundering operation, Operation Pristina, which focused on another of the most important drug traffickers in southern Europe, Abdellah el Haj, better known as Messi.

The sources consulted explained that in the investigation of how Messi laundered the benefits of his drug trafficking businesses, a thread appeared that led to the Chestnut clan. Investigators from the armed institute pulled this thread until culminating in the arrest of Antonio Tejón.

In fact, his arrest was already planned, but it was accelerated after learning of the Cadiz Court hearing that annulled the extension of provisional prison ordered for him by the La Línea court. Given the possibility that he would be released and used to escape - he had already been in search and capture for more than a year - the Civil Guard brought forward the operation of Operation Gums.

The common thread was a company through which the Chestnuts supposedly laundered huge amounts of money. In fact, with this developed operation, two million euros have now been seized, which was in different accounts that controlled the gang's front men.

The organization had created shell companies and opened numerous bank accounts, which received numerous cash receipts. Likewise, it carried out numerous repetitive transfers between the accounts they managed, with the aim of making it difficult to trace the laundered money and proceed to launder the money obtained illegally.

The leader of the Castaña was in prison since February 2018, after being detained after a year on the run and in search and capture for drug trafficking. The procedure, which is being processed by an investigating court in La Línea, was terminated at the beginning of last June by means of a summary order. The court, in addition, agreed to extend the preventive detention against Antonio Tejón, but did so after terminating the instruction and when, according to the Cádiz Court, it was no longer competent.

This judicial error was the one that he took advantage of his defense to request, and obtain, the nullity of that extension of prison and obtain a freedom that, finally, he has not been able to enjoy.

The Gums operation has resulted, in addition to the arrest of Antenio Tejón, with four other arrests , as well as the search of four addresses in the towns of Algeciras, Seville, and two in the Barrios (Cádiz).
