  • Pandemic: Brazil is advancing steadily on the path to becoming the world epicenter of coronavirus

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro passed a bill on the mandatory use of face masks against Covid-19 on Friday, but vetoed some sections that required wearing them in shops, religious temples and schools , among other places where he can have meeting of people.

The president, who denies the severity of the pandemic and censures social isolation measures, argued that in these cases the measure "incurs a possible violation of residence" contrary to the Constitution, according to the text published in the Official Gazette.

'No' to the distribution of free masks

It also vetoed other clauses that obliged the public powers to distribute masks to the most economically vulnerable population and to companies to supply said material to their workers free of charge.

The law passed by Parliament still obliged the population during the health emergency of the new coronavirus to keep "mouth and nose covered by individual protection masks" in public spaces and roads, as well as in public transport or by application.

Bolsonaro's vetoes, which will still have to be analyzed by Congress , do not, however, annul the laws passed in some states and municipalities in which the use of face masks in public spaces is already mandatory, under penalty of fines in some cases. , like Brasilia and Sao Paulo.

Brazil is the Latin American epicenter of the pandemic and the second country with the most infections (almost 1.5 million) and deaths (61,884) caused by the pathogen, according to the latest balance from the Ministry of Health.

Denial of the pandemic

Bolsonaro, one of the few world leaders skeptical about the severity of the Covid-19 , which he describes as "influenza", criticized the project in his usual transmission via social networks on Thursdays because, according to him, there was the possibility of being fined for being home without a mask.

"Today I signed several vetoes to a bill that spoke about the mandatory use of masks, even inside the house. No one is going to enter your house to fine you," said the far-right leader, although there was no mention in the text of that possibility.

Last month, a federal judge ruled that the ruler had to wear the preventive mask when in public. During the pandemic, Bolsonaro has circulated through the streets of Brasilia without a mask and has also participated in demonstrations in his favor in which social isolation measures were not respected.

However, a second instance court annulled that decision after an appeal by the Advocacy General of the Union, which represents the interests of the Brazilian State.
