An envelope of up to 500 euros for Italians to spend their holidays in Italy. To support the tourism sector hit hard by the confinement and the coronavirus epidemic, the Italian government has set up a "holiday bonus".

The measure is funded by the state, which has released 2.4 billion euros. This allowance is subject to conditions and is intended for households whose annual income does not exceed 40,000 euros. The bonus is declined in three amounts: 150 euros for a single person, 300 for a household of two people and 500 euros for a family composed of three or more people, explained last week a letter the management of Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian tax services).

Tax deduction

The allowance can be used in a hotel structure (hotels, bed and breakfast, B & B, etc.) in Italy between July 1 and December 31, 2020. It is accessible via an application launched by the Ministry of Culture generating a QR Code and on which the beneficiary must register. It consists of an 80% discount on the amount due to the host organization, the remaining 20% taking the form of a tax deduction to be applied on the tax return.

Announced in May by the government in one of the emergency decrees issued during the Covid-19 health crisis, the bonus aims to support tourism, a key sector of the Italian economy (13% of GDP) brought to its knees by the pandemic.

Professionals in the sector expect a dizzying fall in activity this summer and its worst figures since 1998, with 56 million fewer nights and a 3.2 billion euro drop in turnover. Italy reopened its borders on June 3 to foreign tourists from the European Union and / or the Schengen area.
