Environmentalist Pierre Hurmic, 65, was elected mayor of Bordeaux on Friday by the city council, immediately announcing that he would "declare the climate emergency" in the Gironde capital, after 73 years of reign of the right.

The lawyer, who spent 25 years in the municipal opposition, was elected with 48 votes, the 14 municipal councilors from the list of his opponent LR Nicolas Florian having voted white and the three from the NPA of Philippe Poutou having chosen the former presidential candidate.

"We will declare a state of climatic emergency," said the new mayor when he was wearing his tricolor scarf. He also renewed his offer to entrust the finance committee to an elected representative of the opposition, and announced the launch of a "financial audit of the city".

"We are not going to overturn the table, we are going to fix it," wanted to reassure Mr. Hurmic, pleading for a "pragmatic, social" ecology, and announcing the holding of "shared power meetings" to include the Bordelais in the decisions.

"Bordeaux Respire", the list of Pierre Hurmic allied to the left, won 46.48% of the votes in the second round of the municipal elections, against 44.12% for that of Nicolas Florian, and 9.39% for that of Philippe Poutou (New Anticapitalist Party).
