The father and trainer of Russian mega-star MMA (mixed martial arts) Khabib Nurmagomedov, Abdulmanap, has died of complications from the coronavirus, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov announced Friday.
"Sad news has come to me, my friends. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov has left this world," he wrote on his social networks: "He left us, having left a good and high name for a worthy generation. ! ", said Mr. Kadyrov before saying a prayer to him.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is a legendary figure in wrestling in Dagestan, the Russian region where he came from. In addition to his son, he has trained dozens of world-class fighters or MMA fighters.
Contaminated by the coronavirus, he had been hospitalized in mid-May in Moscow in a serious condition and placed twice in an artificial coma.
Daguestan is one of the regions most affected by the coronavirus epidemic in Russia, to the point that Vladimir Putin had to intervene personally by ordering emergency measures in the face of the scale of the infections.
In May, Khabib Nurmagomedov called on his compatriots to respect the rules of containment, stressing that the situation was "very difficult in Dagestan" and at the end of May, the army had been sent to deploy a field hospital and to launch screening operations in this very poor little region.
