The Canadian security services arrested an armed individual on Thursday at Rideau Hall, the Ottawa compound where the official residences of the prime minister and the governor-general, who exercises the functions of head of state in the country, are located.

The incident occurred around 6:40 local time, said the Canadian Mounted Police, which is in charge of the security of the Canadian authorities. The security forces apprehended the individual, of whom no details have been released, without further incident.

Neither Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nor his family were at the official residence at the time. The country's governor general, Julie Payette, was also not at her residence, the Mounted Police said.

Canadian authorities noted that the intruder was being questioned by security forces. In a statement distributed to the media, the Mounted Police said that the rapid intervention of the agents allowed "the safe capture of the suspect" and that neither the intruder nor anyone from the security forces had suffered injuries.

Images broadcast on local televisions showed a police robot inspecting a black pickup truck inside the Rideau Hall compound, which is protected by a metal fence and is usually open to the public.

In addition, police officers with dogs searched the interior and contents of the vehicle, which appeared to contain several boxes. The vehicle's airbags were activated.

Although the Mounted Police announced a press conference to offer more details about the incident, the call has been delayed on several occasions and had not yet occurred at 14:00 local time.

Security incidents for Canadian rulers are rare, and ministers typically attend events with little or no visible security and, in some cases, public transportation.

One of the best-known incidents in which a Canadian prime minister was involved occurred more than 20 years ago, during the mandate of liberal Jean Chrétien.

But in this case, it was the Prime Minister's security services that had to protect a left-wing protester who Chrétien grabbed by the neck and broke a tooth after an exchange of words on a street in the town of Hull.
