03 July 2020After 14 years, Sandro Veronesi has again won the Strega Prize. His "Colibrì" received the favor of the jury, imposing itself on the other five finalists with a wide margin.

The writer won 200 votes out of the 605 voters with the novel "The Hummingbird" (The Ship of Theseus).

The proclamation was announced by the president of the jury, Antonio Scurati, winner of the 2019 edition with "M. The son of the century" (Bompiani), at the end of the ballot that was held tonight at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome .

For Veronesi, who was given as a superfavorite, it is the second triumph for the Witch: he had already won 14 years ago, in 2006, with "Calos calm" (Bompiani). Before Veronesi only another writer was crowned twice winner: Paolo Volponi in 1965, with "The world machine", and in 1991, with "The road to Rome".

Also another writer, Carlo Cassola, already winner with "La ragazza di Bube" in 1960, had tried to repeat the Witch but he didn't succeed: it happened in 1971 with "Fear and sadness", but the winner, on that occasion, was Raffaello Brignetti with "The golden beach".

"Holding the position means not giving up, the hummingbird is in fact the symbol of the warriors, of all those who never give up," said Sandro Veronesi speaking of his novel during the ceremony with the six finalists, which was broadcast live on Raitre with the conduction of Giorgio Zanchini. And as usual, the winner toasted by drinking a bottle of the Strega Liquor, the historic sponsor of the Prize.
