Is the epidemic out of control in Brazil? The country crossed Wednesday the milestone of 60,000 deaths from the coronavirus, announced the Ministry of Health. More than a thousand people died within 24 hours.

Brazil, the country in the world where the Covid-19 kills the most every day for almost a week, deplores a total of 60,632 deaths, according to the data of the ministry, considered as largely undervalued by the scientific community because this country practice few tests. Also of great concern: the figure for new infections announced on Wednesday is one of the highest ever recorded with 46,712 additional cases in 24 hours, a sign that the pandemic is flaring in the largest country in Latin America.

Regional disparities

The states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the most affected, with 15,030 and 10,198 deaths, respectively, for nearly 290,000 and 116,000 infections. These two states have nevertheless ordered the resumption of economic and commercial activities after confinement for more than three months. In terms of death and contamination - 1.44 million cases - Brazil, with its 212 million inhabitants, is the country most affected by the coronavirus behind the United States.

However, it deplores 284 deaths per million inhabitants, far behind the United States (385) or Italy (575). But this average hides great regional disparities: the state of Rio de Janeiro registers 584 deaths per million inhabitants and that of Ceara (Northeast) 673 - rates comparable to those of the countries hit hard. Brazil, which registered its first Covid-19 death on March 16, recorded a record number of new infections last week (more than 259,000). And 7,005 people died from this disease last week, just behind the record 7,285 deaths recorded the previous week.

Too early lifting of containment

For scientists, Brazil is not hit by a single pandemic, but by a series of pandemics. “There are several Brazil. In some places the pandemic is receding, in others it is progressing, "Professor Roberto Medonho, director of the research division of Clementino Fraga Filaga University Hospital at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, told AFP. .

This scientist considered "early and inappropriate", the measures to start lifting the confinement of states like those of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, restaurants, bars and gyms are slated to reopen on Thursday, and the football championship resumed in mid-June, drawing widespread criticism. In Sao Paulo, the economic capital of Brazil, shops have reopened.

The population is tired of confinement that has lasted for more than three months and physical distancing is relaxing: the rate of contamination by each infected person has risen to 1.51. "This figure will increase further with the reopenings," predicted Roberto Medonho.
