The presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran will hold this afternoon, Wednesday, the regular summit in the framework of the so-called Astana track on the Syrian crisis, through video service due to the outbreak of Corona.

The leaders discuss issues related to the political settlement by re-launching the work of the Constitutional Committee, as well as security issues related to the implementation of the Russian-Turkish agreements related to northern Syria and Idlib Governorate.

The summit comes with the increasing frequency of Israeli bombing recently of Iranian sites in Syria, and the entry into force of the "Caesar Law", which imposes sanctions on the Syrian regime and its main supporters, Russia and Iran.

For his part, the Kremlin said that it is scheduled to hold talks today between Presidents Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani and Turkish Recep Erdogan at about 11 am GMT.

After the escalation in the violence led to the displacement of about one million Syrians, Turkey and Russia agreed in March to stop the fighting in the Idlib region in northwestern Syria, at a time when warplanes bombed villages in the opposition-held area.

Russia and Iran are major supporters of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria, while Turkey supports the opposition forces. But they all agreed - through a diplomatic process dating back to 2017 - to work to reduce the escalation between them.
