There are no reports of accidents or injuries related to the decision, but Volvo Cars sees it as a preventive measure to avoid future problems. But the company has discovered that a steel wire attached to the front seat belts can be weakened. And that reduces the protection from the seat belt.

Biggest recall

- The steel wire can be subjected to wear under special conditions, for a shorter period of time. It is a very rare problem, says Stefan Elfström.

The recall applies to the whole world. In Sweden, there are about 412,000 cars. It is the biggest recall the company has made.

- It will be bigger than before because it is a standard component that has been used in our older cars for several years, says Stefan Elfström.

Owners of the cars in question will be contacted by letter asking them to contact a Volvo workshop to have the car repaired. The car then gets a new component that replaces the steel wire.

Several models

- We have discovered the problem through analysis of a few cars where we see that the problem has arisen. And then we have come to the conclusion that there is a systematic but rare problem with this component, says Stefan Elfström, press spokesman at Volvo Cars.

The cars involved are the Volvo S60, S60L, S60CC, V60, V60CC, XC60, V70, XC70, S80 and S80L, which were manufactured from 2006 to 2019. No models currently manufactured are included in the recall.
