In total, the committee, which decides on the support that the state gives to journalistic activities, has received 231 applications from various companies dealing with local journalism for support for 2020. A total of 192 applications have been granted.

Media in a total of 20 out of 21 counties will receive the support. The decision on which media should receive their applications was based on what the local conditions for journalism have looked like, and how long-term initiatives behind the applications are.

Different types of media

"This money is a good example of how we can make a concrete contribution to increased journalism and surveillance in all parts of Sweden," Charlotte Ingvar-Nilsson, Director General of the Swedish Press, Radio and Television Directorate writes in a press release.

Among the media receiving support are newspapers, free newspapers, web magazines and a news app.

Owned by groups

In Skåne, with the exception of Skånska Dagbladet, the recipients are in media groups that have operations outside Skåne's borders. Kristianstadsbladet and Ystads Allehanda are owned by the private limited company Gota Media AB, which also owns newspapers in Småland, Blekinge and Västergötland.

Sydsvenskan and Helsingborgs Dagblad - which together receive SEK 2.3 million - are owned by Bonnier News Local with some 40 newspaper titles around the country.

Skåne Dagbladet, which has the same owner as Northern Skåne, receives the smallest support: half a million kronor.
