Emergency back pedaling on deconfinement. Faced with the "alarming progression" of coronavirus cases, the Californian governor announced on Wednesday the immediate closure of bars, museums and cinemas for "at least three weeks" in a large part of the state, especially in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley - San Francisco had already announced Friday that the second phase of reopening was postponed until mid-July.

Catering "in confined spaces" is also prohibited, but terraces can, for the time being, remain open, said Gavin Newsom. Three days before the national holiday of July 4, the beaches will also be closed this weekend in Southern California and in the bay of San Francisco. The governor encouraged people to wear a mask and avoid gatherings. Memorial Day weekend in late May seems to have accelerated the transmission of the virus. Last week, Texas and Florida, where the epidemic worries, had also placed restrictions on bars.

Three times daily Covid cases in one month

In recent days, California has registered more than 6,000 new daily cases of Covid, three times more than at the end of May. Hospitalizations, even if the emergency services are not yet saturated, are increasing, as is the rate of positive tests. Deaths remain stable for the moment, but the curve should, according to all logic, start rising again within 15 days.

The restrictions concern 19 counties, notably those of Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento and Santa Clara, which cover nearly 75% of the Californian population. Gavin Newsom insisted, "the fight is far from won".
