Düsseldorf (dpa) - According to Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU), the government of North Rhine-Westphalia has not made a decision about a guarantee for FC Schalke 04.
He could not confirm reports of public aid for the financially troubled Bundesliga soccer club in the amount of 40 million euros, said Laschet in Düsseldorf. In general, however, there have been guarantees for football and sports clubs under each state government since 1995. However, such applications should be treated strictly confidentially and checked. Public speculation is forbidden. "There will certainly be no Lex Schalke," said Laschet.
The Bundesliga twelfth reported liabilities of EUR 197 million for the 2019 financial year. The loss of revenue caused by the corona crisis created additional financial problems. In addition, after 16 games without a win, the club missed the qualification for a lucrative European competition.
