From next fall, officials will be entitled to extended paternity leave if the child is hospitalized after birth, for example in the case of a premature baby, the government announced on Tuesday. This measure has already been applied in the private sector since July 1, 2019.

Civil servants will be able to benefit in the fall from the extended paternity leave in the event of hospitalization just after birth, for example when the baby is premature, like what has existed for a year in the private sector, the government announced on Tuesday . Since July 1, 2019, fathers have had an additional 30-day paternity leave in the event of the hospitalization of their child. This is in addition to the existing paternity leave, which lasts 11 days (or 18 in the event of multiple births). "This measure has benefited 3,868 fathers or spouses during the first year of its implementation", rejoice in their press release the Secretary of State Olivier Dussopt and Adrien Taquet.

Almost full salary replacement

"The extension of this device to the public service is provided for by an ordinance on which the trade unions will soon be consulted," they announce. This leave benefits the father or the mother's spouse during the child's hospitalization period, following birth, in a specialized service (neonatal care units performing intensive care as well as in neonatal resuscitation units) . Its compensation arrangements are the same as those for paternity leave and guarantee almost complete salary replacement.

This extension was decided following a report from the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs in 2018. This report generally recommended extending the duration of paternity leave from one to two weeks, like decisions made in other European countries. The government "is working on all of these recommendations as part of the project of the first 1,000 days of the child's life," says Adrien Taquet.
