While the Ségur de la Santé should soon close, healthcare workers took to the streets again in several major French cities on Tuesday. They are asking for more resources for the hospital and higher salaries. In Strasbourg, caregivers from the private and public sectors demonstrated hand in hand.

REPORTAGE

A few days before the closing of the Ségur de la santé, hospital staff demonstrated again in dozens of cities on Tuesday, to obtain more than the 6.3 billion euros already put on the table by the government. In Strasbourg, carers from the public and the private sector demonstrated together to demand more means for the hospital and an increase in their salaries.

"We all have the same job, all the same demands and now we will unite because there is enough, health is for everyone," exclaims a protester. "They already need five billion just for the public so there won't be anything left for the rest?" She wonders. "The Covid-19 bounty, we are still waiting for it when apparently all the public had it."

"We get insulted, we get spit on"

Hospital staff believe that the 6.3 billion euros promised by the government is not enough. "It would take roughly twice [6.3 billion euros] to be able to breathe new life into all of health, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes. It was a promise from our president when he came to Mulhouse so now he has to stick to it and give money to everyone in the health sector, "said a carer present in the Strasbourg procession.

On the front line in the coronavirus crisis, protesters are also demanding more respect. "We are insulted. We get spit on. We do not do this job for that. We would like a minimum of recognition," says another protesters.
