Jeanne Baserghian could not hide her emotion and her pride Sunday evening, when celebrating her election. - CHRISTELLE REWIAKO / SIPA

  • After the two terms of socialist Roland Ries, the Strasbourg elected the environmentalist Jeanne Barseghian on Sunday.
  • What will his coming to power mean? We toured the main subjects, such as cycling, the economy, diesel, etc.
  • And what about the Meinau stadium? Jeanne Baraseghian will she abandon its expansion?

Nothing could stop it. Not even a failed rapprochement with Catherine Trautmann, an LREM-LR alliance or the regular criticisms of her opponents. The Jeanne Barseghian wave was too strong. As in the first round, the ecologist won the second round of the municipal elections with a good margin over his opponents. Almost 3,500 votes ahead of Alain Fontanel, not far from 10,000 over Catherine Trautmann… The Strasbourg residents' desire to go green was clear. And now ? What to expect from the mandate of the EELV representative? We go around the main topics.

The results of the municipal elections in Strasbourg

Yes she will plant trees

All the candidates had a little greening their program, but not as much as Jeanne Barseghian. "I intend to start this summer the great plan of revegetation and demineralization," she launched in the vast interview she had given to 20 Minutes during the inter-tour. The ecologist also mentioned "provisional devices to have islands of freshness" and "plantations". Concretely, the trees will not arrive before the fall, a period conducive to their development. Before that, she promises to install “islands of freshness and shade” very quickly. Her long-term goal? The 39-year-old jurist has often said it: that a green space is accessible in less than five minutes for each Strasbourg resident.

A scheduled diesel outing

We did a good search in its program distributed before the second round, the word "diesel" does not appear there. Would it be taboo? Since his predecessor Roland Ries undertook to ban diesel engines from Strasbourg on January 1, 2025, the subject has become somewhat sensitive. Jeanne Barseghian was however committed to keeping the calendar in February. "It is above all a question of public health," she explained. Since then, faced with a fear expressed by many Strasbourg residents, the ecologist has rather evoked "consultations with the inhabitants" during "citizen conferences". Where there should be question of a "social support policy".

On the bike

Even in the French capital of cycling, the debate on new cycle paths exists. During the deconfinement, Jeanne Barseghian had thus supported the open letter sent to the elected officials of the agglomeration by fifteen actors of green transport. Their wishes? The creation of cycle lanes on motorways, the removal / requisition of parking spaces or even the free Vel'Hop… The coming to power of the EELV representative should speed up the process. In its program, it intends to "create cycle routes on all the main axes to connect nearby neighborhoods and municipalities". The native of Suresnes also evokes an "express route around the Big Island", while calling for "perpetuate the meeting area in the city center. A little further, Jeanne Barseghian also promises to "support, with aid, the rental and purchase of bikes, cargo bikes and / or electrics." In short, the bicycle has a bright future ahead in the Alsatian capital…

An emergency fund for the local economy

She made it one of her top three post-election priorities. The new mayor of Strasbourg intends to support the local economy. How? 'Or' What ? "I propose to bring together all the players around a pact for a sustainable local economy," she explained in her interview. Clearly, Jeanne Barseghian wants to create an "emergency fund of two million euros" for traders and artisans to help them "recover from the crisis". In the longer term, she would like to draw up "a pact for a sustainable local economy". One part of which should concern school canteens, where she sees the future in organic farming through local market gardening.

The enlargement of the Meinau threatened?

Unlike Alain Fontanel for example, the ecologist is not used to the Meinau stadium. Not a fan of football and Racing, the new mayor? Since his election, some supporters of the club fear him and believe the expansion of their lair (from 26,000 to 32,500 places) threatened. It must also be said that one of Jeanne Barseghian's running mate, Alain Jund, had proposed "to halve public investments" when the subject of 100 million euros was raised at the municipal council on June 25, 2018. Two years more later, the group's position changed. "The project is underway and must continue," said the head of the EELV list last February. She should soon see the five selected architectural firms present their plans.
