  • The Nice ecology list carried by Jean-Marc Governatori came in third position during the second round of municipal elections, with 19.28% of the votes.
  • Without upsetting the political landscape of the city, the "green wave" seems to have blown a bit in Nice too.

“It's an unexpected score for a city like Nice, anchored to the right and to the far right. It is a great achievement. We have an ecological electorate, but not mature enough. The electorate in Paca sees ecology on the left, "notes Jean-Marc Governatori, at the head of the Nice ecology list (gathering of ecological parties behind EELV).

Sunday, he collected 19.28% of the vote and the last place, behind Philippe Vardon (RN) and his 21.32%. Christian Estrosi (LR) was re-elected despite record abstention (72.25%) with the very comfortable score of 59.30%.

But while big cities in France elected candidates from the ecological list even in those historically on the right like Nancy or Bordeaux, Nice was not affected by the "green wave". The capital of the Riviera has remained "consistent with itself", says Gilles Ivaldi, a researcher in political science at the University of the Côte d'Azur.

Nice, a city anchored on the right…

“Nice is a little different from other big cities. It has been anchored on the right since the 1980s, moreover, in local elections. There is no favorable space for environmentalists, ”said the political scientist.

There is also the sociological reality of the city which does not facilitate the installation of an ecological vote. "The population is old, with artisans and traders who are more right-wing social categories and rather reluctant to ecology", further details the researcher. A few kilometers away, "in Valbonne, an environmental mayor [Joseph Cesaro] has just been elected and it is consistent in this town", points Gilles Ivaldi again.

… But not insensitive to the “green wave”

Nice is not (yet) a favorable field. “There is still a rise in environmental awareness, reassures the candidate EELV Jean-Marc Governartori. We managed to make the best score in France with a 100% green list ”. Nice ecology has brought together all the sensitivities of the green vote but has refused, contrary to what may have happened elsewhere in France, to approach the other lists on the left.

The results of the municipal elections in Nice

Nice at the heart of socialist Patrick Allemand and the ViVa citizen list! shared 15% of the votes in the first round. “The space on the left is so small in Nice that a green list, alone, which makes 20%, is already a good score. But that remains insufficient to cause a changeover as in Lyon or Bordeaux ”, concludes Gilles Ivaldi.
